To the best of our knowledge, this was the first paper to conduct a focused study of zero-dose (unvaccinated) children in India. This study investigated the compositional and contextual determinants of non-receipt of childhood vaccines in India using multilevel modelling. It considered children who received no vaccines at all, and those who received no vaccines via routine immunization systems. It highlighted the importance of a variety of factors linked to non-vaccination, and demonstrated how they varied by geographical context. The paper suggested a strong need for subnational tailored strategies to improve immunization coverage for these very vulnerable children.
